The Casio AQ-340 is a rare, vintage analogue-digital hybrid watch originally released around 1986.
Highly regarded by collectors as potentially the first model in Casio's iconic AQ series, it stands out for its premium, heavy-metal construction and unique 1980s styling compared to more recent resin-based retro releases.
Key Specifications & Design

  • Case & Build: Features a heavy, solid stainless steel/metal case and a matching stainless steel bracelet, giving it a much more substantial weight on the wrist than modern entry-level Casio watches.
  • The Glass: Characterised by a unique vintage aesthetic where the glass protrudes about 2mm above the watch face.
  • The Dial Layout: Houses a classic 33 mm square profile featuring three traditional analogue hands—including a rare dedicated second hand—paired with a clear digital LCD screen at the bottom.
  • Time Adjustment: Employs a physical crown wheel to adjust the analogue hands, a distinct departure from many modern analogue-digital Casio's that rely entirely on electronic buttons.
  • Core Functions: Powered by a quartz movement (utilising a 721 battery), it includes a stopwatch, a single alarm, date/calendar indicator, and dual time tracking.
Historical Context & Collectability

When it debuted in the mid-1980s, the AQ-340 was a high-end offering. One point of agreement among users is that its original retail price was around £80–£90, making it significantly more premium than modern retro counterparts like the plastic-cased AQ-230 or the newer AQ-240 series.
Today, it is a highly sought-after vintage item. Because it has been out of production for decades, finding one is very rare.
