The Casio BP-100 is a historic digital wristwatch released by Casio in 1991 (Module 900).
It holds a legendary status among watch enthusiasts as the world's first consumer wearable capable of measuring blood pressure and pulse directly from the wrist, making it a direct design predecessor to modern smartwatches.
🩺 Innovative Health Technology
The watch was a massive technological leap for the early 1990s, using a dual-sensor system to calculate vitals without needing an inflatable arm cuff.
- The Sensors: It features a built-in optical sensor plate on the front face where you place your fingertip, combined with a metal contact plate on the case back that touches your wrist.
- How It Works: It uses electro-potential sensing and early pulse-wave detection. By measuring the subtle colour changes in your finger and tracking the timing of the pulse wave traveling between your wrist and finger, it estimates your blood pressure and heart rate.
- Memory & Performance: The watch can store up to 30 history recordings along with biometric data to show trends over time. However, the technology is highly temperamental—readings require you to remain perfectly still, and accuracy drops if your hands are cold or your wrist is hairy.
