The Casio CGW-500, famously known as the "Cosmo Phase" (utilising Module 830), is a legendary vintage digital watch released in the mid-to-late 1980s.

Highly coveted by collectors, it is often referred to as a "Holy Grail" of vintage Casio timepieces because it features a fully functional miniature planetarium on your wrist.

CGW-500 is a rare retro-futuristic astronomical watch.

Key Features & Mechanics

  • Miniature Planetarium: The watch features an oval LCD screen that graphically replicates the real-time orbital positions of the solar system's planets rotating around the central sun.
  • 300-Year Astronomical Calendar: Spanning from 1901 to 2200, the software allows you to fast-forward or rewind to any specific date to predict or view planetary alignments, solar eclipses, and space events.
  • Halley’s Comet Tracker: It plots the specific trajectory of Halley's Comet, indicating past paths and its next expected closest approach to Earth on May 7, 2134.
  • Premium Case Material: Unlike its more common resin-cased sibling (the CGW-50), the premium CGW-500 version features a durable steel case with a stainless steel case back and a higher 100-metre water resistance rating.
Unique Animations & Modes

As users widely celebrate around the world the watch handles standard digital modes with custom space-themed graphics:
  • Alarm: When the hourly chime or a daily alarm sounds, a shooting star/comet animations flies across the top part of the screen.
  • Stopwatch: When you activate the chronograph, a line of planets swoops rapidly around the solar system graphics to show that time is running.
  • Countdown Timer: As time ticks down, the outer planets disappear one by one every few seconds. In the final five seconds, a pulsing animation disperses all the planets away from the sun.
